If your power only goes out for a couple minutes, this would do. But what if the power goes out for an hour or more? For more than a few minuted these units would not do the job. I say save your money and buy a nice inverter and battery. I got a 400W inverter for $50 at Target and a 800 cold cranking amp battery for $90 at Autozone. Another idea is to buy a battery powered air pump as a backup for circulation. They cost less than $15. Here is a link to a comprehensive disscusion on power failures by Richard Durso: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/ ... eature.htm

A UPS will work if it's a sine wave output. Otherwise, the motors on pumps and powerheads may hum or burn out. Here's a good thread about UPS systems and other power back-up recommendations.

Not entirely true. You should check with the manufacturer of the pump. I have a Sequence pump, hooked up to a tripplite 500 watt inverter/charger that puts out a modified sine wave. I called sequence about it, even told them about the humming noise. They told me their pump would work fine with a modified sign wave.
