When I had my reef I couldn't afford anything other than a mix of normal output lighting. I was able to keep quite well my softies, and some LPS, as well as my T. derasa. Saw great growth in all, including my clam (until that damned MANTIS got to him  ).

Happy now, Ben? :D

OK....Here Goes...I will respond to this Poll....I have a 225 gallon reef which has been set up for about 3-4 months now...I originally had 4 250Watt MH 10,000K with 4 URI 160 Watt Wht Actinics...I have since removed the URI's and replaced them with 4 PC'c of 96 Watts. The URI were a pain to change the bulbs...the endcaps were of poor design and took too long to replace and get up and running...The PC's are much easier to deal wit.................

Thanks, carter! You should put in your profile that you're hardly a noob, too. ;)

Originally started with 4x96 PC (2 daylight 2 actinic) over a 60gal. Have since upgraded to a 2x175 10kk MH setup with 2x96 actinic PC, and I think my clams/corals are much happier now.

i voted for mh's and vho's because i have 2 tanks one lit with 2 175watt MH's (soon to be upgraded to 250waters) and my other FO tank is lit by 2 6' 175 VHO's. the fish look cool under the vho's but they look better when the sun hits the one side of my tank. they actually seem to sparkel in the natural sun light. i wish we had something close to what the natural sun does. oh well i guess i will keep on dreaming.

Over my 58 (36x18x21) I have a 250W HQI 10k DE PFO fixture and 2x95W VHO Actinics.

I love the color. Crisp white and the corals great color.

I currently have 2 400 wt 10k halides over my 90 gallon with 2 NO actinics, I'm hoping to soon upgrade them to VHO. I agree with golfish, anything but halides is a waste, I wish I wouldnt have started out with PC's.
