I currently have a CPR 13gal mini set up with somewhat of a deep sandbed made of very fine sugar like substrate. The 13 does not allow much space for a deep sandbed. Anyway, I am in the process of having a 120 gal custom made. It should be here early October. I can't make up my mind regarding substrate. Sometimes I lean to a courser sandbed and then sometimes, after much reading, a fine deep sandbed. Your opinions would be greatly appreciated. In the past, I have always received very good advice from the group.
Thanks
Don

Recently people on these boards that have a very fine sand bed, have expressed their dislike at having
the fine sand stirring up and clouding up the tank.
I use a 1.5-3mm sand myself, which is courser than
the 1-2mm sugar sand. I've never had that problem.

Sugar-sized sand is actually 0.2-1.2mm. IMO if the sand bed is going to be in the main tank go with slightly larger sand, like 1-2mm.

Oops! I made a mistake. Nice thing about reef.org is if you make a
mistake, someone will catch it. I should have said , I use1-1.7mm.
Aragamax (sugar sized) is .2-1.22mm. I looked it up this time.
Thanks SBGRAD24

Thanks for the replys. If I remember correctly, I used Aragamax in my 13. I really like the way it looks and so far haven't had much of a blowing problem. As a result of further reading last night on the boards, I have just about decided to go with the same sand, just a 2" or so base. I intend to dismantle my 13 and use the sand in it for the refugium. I am going to cycle with uncured live rock and that should help with the cycling. Thanks again for your replies.
