Myt tank is leaking!!!!!

Came home after a brutal day of work to find my 58G Oceanic reef tank leaking from a silicone seal at the bottom of the tank. Only about 20 gallons soaked into my carpet and was able to save all rock, corals and livestock in 5 gallon buckets. I have powerheads running right now. Do you think everything will be OK until I can get a new tank tomorrow? Anything else I should do at this time??

Sorry to hear about your problem Mitchell. Sounds like you got home in the nick of time. Did you lose anything? Do you have any fish? Are all of your corals spaced so they are not stinging each other?

I can't think of anything else right now.

I'm really sorry to hear that!

Aside from keeping the buckets well circulated, make sure you've got temperature maintained as well. That's about all you can do until your new tank is up and running. Hopefully others will have more suggestions.

If you can keep their temp fairly stable you should be ok. Most of the time our corals spend 24 hours in transport to the LFS in small bags of water in the dark if that gives you any hope.

How old was the tank? Don't hear much about silicone seals leaking these days.

Tank was 10 years old but was never dry. I'm not sure why this seal failed.
Good point about spacing the corals so they won't sting. Right now everything looks like its in shock from the move. I don't have many fish (to my family's dismay) and they seem OK.

I'll keep you all posted about my progress tomorrow with a new tank purchase. If I can't find a tank I like, I do have a friend who does tank maintanance who might be able to hold my livestock for a few days.

Put all my corals and other livestock in a cheap 20gallon tank with some powerheads for now. Decided to upgrade to a 70G acrylic tank which is being built for me this week.

In the face of catastrophe, my only loss so far is a cleaner shrimp. I think my brittle star got hungry when they were all in a 5gallon bucket together. The corals look depressed but at least they are alive.

Sorry to hear about your tank, I have only heard of a few Oceanics leaking even after ten years. You could always re-seal the tank later, It would make a great QT or Grow out tank. Also brittle stars are opportunists, if they can corner a shrimp or other tasty tank mate they will eat them no matter if they are hungry or not. Keep an eye on that brittle star, it may go for others now that it has a taste for shrimp. I had one eat a fire shrimp in my 55, I took it out after it started to go for the cleaners.
