Hey, gang. Can someone help me with the bylaws and mores regarding shipping corals in the summertime?

Specifically, trying to get some zooanthids from Florida to Wisconsin. Pretty hot down there, so do we need coldpacks? With coldpacks, will it get too cold? Is Priority good enough, or is it a definite overnighter?

What container do we need?

I have never shipped or received coral through the mail before. Heh. Wow, seems crazy, doesn't it?

Thanks,

I've had them shipped in the summer from TX to OH and it took 4 days for the zoanthids to get from there to here. Zoanthids are pretty bulletproof in my experience and they made it here just fine.

The shipping container we used was a good quality $10 insulated thermos from Walmart. The zoanthids were placed in the thermos, about 1/3-1/2 full of water (leave a fair amount of head space for air so that they don't suffocate), container was closed, and black electrical tape was used to seal the seams around the lid and other places. We then shipped them in Priority mailer boxes from the post office. We did not use any sort of cold packs at all.

They're still alive and kicking 1.5 yrs later. :)

It took a lot out of me, Chris! :p

We were thinking the thermos route with coldpacks outside it so the box doesn't get too hot.

Thanks for the info, guys. Supposedly, these are some pretty rockin' zoos coming my way, so I'll share pics when they're established.

Agreed...Zoos are pretty tough but even so if you have it shipped PRONTO you can get it sent in the evening from FLA and to in WIS before noon the next day for the more sensitive stuff. I had a max clam, cultured zoos and a large favia sent from FLA to OK in 12 hours with no cold packs. No problems. It gets hotter than hell here in summer (100 plus regularly) and almost as hot there in FLA.

If they had just been zoos I'd had opted for for 2nd day shipping with good packing.
