'Nemo' spawns clown fish craze

By Susan Salisbury, Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, June 11, 2003

Taylor Jones / The Palm Beach Post

Since Finding Nemo hit the screen, S. Fla. pet stores have seen demand for clown fish rise. The movie turns some off to the idea of containing fish.

• Check Nemo showtimes
• Leslie Streeter's review

Around here, they're asking for Nemo by name.

And Dory, too.

In what can be nothing else than a mounting wave of kid power, area pet shops say they're seeing an increase in sales of clown fish since the debut May 30 of Finding Nemo, the Disney/Pixar Studios animated tale of a fishnapping that had taken in $143.3 million nationwide as of last weekend. The bright-orange ocellaris clown fish, or false percula clown fish, is the species that most closely resembles Nemo.

here's the rest of the story http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/c...ions/wednesday/news_e36edae146b2f08400a9.html

i just got back from seeing the movie.

i think the movie did a fine job of portraying the ugly side if this hobby and i would hope it would deter someone from having a "Darla" as a child.

however, it does seem typical for people to react this way. fortunately the star of the show is commonly seen as a tank raised specimen at petco.
sadly we can't say as much for the tang.

hey, at least this article tells one how to ask for the species by a name other than "Nemo". i hate it when i look ignorant at a fish shop

This morning CBS Early Show did a short thing on how to set up a Nemo/Dory Tank . . . IT WAS HORRIFYING

They took a 5 gal Eclipse kinda thing with a HO filter, put in some rocks and plastic plants and then proceeded to put in 2 perculas, 1 hippo, 2 serpent stars, and 2 sea horses. They said you just need to be sure to let the bag sit in the tank water for 5-10 min to acclimate the fish and put a little water conditioner in because tap water isn't so good for the fish. They then proceeded to say not to overstock your tank and that 1-inch of fish per gallon was a good general rule.

Gonna be alot of dead percs and hippos out there . . .

I just emailed them a rant

As a former marine aquaria storeowner and avid hobbyist, I was appalled this morning to see your story on creating a Nemo and Dory tank. While housing one clownfish is perfectly acceptable in the tank that was being used a Hippo tang had no reason for being in there. The MINIMUM tank size that a hippo should be put in is a 4’ 90 gallon tank. They really should not be put in anything less than a 6’ long tank. The 1” of fish/ gallon is not a good rule of thumb in saltwater tanks. Many saltwater fish are collected when they are juveniles and get much bigger. That tiny hippo tang in the tank will continue to grow until it gets too big for that tank and it will die. (That is unless it dies from the stress of being in such a small container)

If you are interested in providing your listeners with the proper way of setting up one of these tanks I can show you, or I can send you to one of the largest online Fish/Reef aquaria message boards: http://www.reefs.org Reefs.org (RDO) is a non-profit organization that is interested in educating aquarists of all levels. RDO also publishes a monthly magazine called Advanced Aquarist’s Online. This can be found at: http://www.advancedaquarist.com

Thank you for your time,

It was staggering . . . the person they interviewed was from Tetra. A few folks in my local reef organization have sent some nasty-grams to CBS and Tetra.

Never been to Zelderon but if you're heading back anytime soon take me with you please. :D

Good note Chris.

We (Boston Reefers Society) actually made a press release before the movie came out trying to avoid this. Didnt get pick up by CBS though. Probably not a good news story telling people that salt tanks aren't like keeping goldfish.

Could anybody supply me with proof that CBS did this?

Not to be smart, but I would like to complain to them about it, but since I don't normally watch CBS I missed it.

I am all set to go off on them.

Thanks

Bryan

ps, all I need is a link to a news story or such

One of my LFS's has a sign on the shop that says "We Found Nemo". purple_tang2001, he is also one of your LFS's in Toledo.

He has ordered a bunch of 10 Gallon Eclipse tanks and plans on setting up an assembly line and pump them out.

Kind of sick.

It's all in the marketing. We haven't sold a single Nemo tank to anyone, and haven't had anyone even ask. But we moved the percs and hippos up to the top row where the kids can't easily spot them.

using that 'mind of the customer' book you had a while back rover? Nice. I like it. And I bet the parents aren't pointing them out. "oh well, kids, no nemos here!"

I think if we can find a link to the story, we should post it on all the saltwater boards. (off to do research.)

This should also be posted in the General Reefkeeping Discussion, I'll notify one of the mods so it gets 'front page' status.

That is all very disturbing! I work at a LFS in my town, and I can't tell you how annoying it is when kids run in screaming "NEMO" at the top of their small but productive lungs. I'm not sure the movie really got its point across since all its done is make the Darla's of the world want more fish! Great letter to CBS, by the way. I hope they got a good earful, probably from this forum alone! Good job guys!

if i hear one more pita kid scream for nemo in our store i'm gonna have a coniption fit :P

we get 'em almost daily, now

methinks this flick will do loads to kill lotsa clownfish/hippo tangs, to say nothing of giving folks the idea that there's nothng wrong w/flushing a live fish down the toilet

and good for you, rover :D

Just sent the following email to [email protected]

I cannot believe that your program would air a segment and do absolutely no research into how what you were teaching had any merit? To show people how to set up a small tank with the type of fish that you showed is appalling.

I am not a animal rights advocate but I do care about how pets are treated. I am a aquarist and have been for many years. To keep these animals it should at the very least be a priority to keep them in an environment that promotes good health.

What you showed is a death trap gimmick that no doubt you will pass off as you were just following the recommendations of what a retailer told you would work. DO SOME RESEARCH!! This is in no way shape or form even close to what these animals need. I hope you do take the responsibility to run a segment where you at least show the proper way to care for these tropical fish and what requirements they need to survive.

If I were a person who gambles, I bet however you will just pass it off as not your responsibility for all the fish you just helped to kill and how much damage to natural reefs that demand will destroy.

Or you could look at it as you just help to create a new story, "Look at the damage to reefs the show Finding Nemo caused". When you run that story please be honest enough to include how misrable your staff was in preparing the segment you ran.
