Whereas the following article does not seem as blatantly detrimental as the on air demonstration by Tetra, it does minimalize the care/work that is required to keeps salt-water tank. If taken verbatim I highly doubt much of a success rate for the tank owner. I don't know if this particular segment was ever aired, but this is taken from the DIY Network webpage.

Please note there are no references for further reading/education. According to them it really is this easy.

That video is just relly sad, Plastic plants to boot. I could not watch anymore. I like how they threw Old Glory in there too. I am so glad I do not watch TV.

They had an employee from Petco on NBC's Today show this morning. I watched the segment which lasted about 10 minutes. It wasn't too bad. The employee recommended that people buy tank-raised clownfish as they will do better than ocean caught fish. The tank looked like it was about 20-30 gallons, and had only Percula clownfish (Looked like about 6 or 7). They also made an effort to tell kids not to flush their fish, and to make a proper marine environment which was different from a goldfish tank.

For more details, they recommended you talk to your local Petco dealer...*cough* -blatant ad- *cough*

I just watched the video clip. I'm really glad I didn't watch the Early Show live. A Hippo tang in a 5 gallon tank with plastic plants?

I better not say anything else or this will turn into an editorial.

Yeah I saw that same segment, I was scrutinizing that dude with a keen ear and I also thought he was okay. He didn't "sell" the nemo setup any differently than a pre-nemo LFS would sell a like-29g setup. He mentioned the use of correct maintenance, the true expense involved, and the responsibilities of buying maricultured live goods even down to his use of plastic plants in the tank. Aside from the petco plug, he was not offensive IMO.

But, did you see the huge airstone and microbubbles they had all floating around in that tank? I knew you fish guys would catch him on that one!

I think our chat forums and the countless others have reamed tetra a good one and they know it, so anyone who jumps on the nemo bandwagon will now have to write something like what Vitz saw in his local LFS> something a little more truthful than just "get your nemo setup here cheap!"----> if a LFS wants to sell a themed setup and they will preface it with something like that sign, or at least a similar attitude, I think that is ethical and okay.

I think we are all having a collective positive effect on this nemo blitz thing.

just to make it clear

our store has not jumped on the nemo bandwagon- quite the opposite

that is the reason for the sign-we will not let someone buy a 'nemo' setup

Vitz,

That is a great flier! I wish all LSF had postings like that in their stores in conspicuous places all of the time.

Bravo!

i feel a seriose rant coming on. I have not seen the movie, probably won't. so i have remained pretty neutral. the schindlers list coment was about my take. Although the world is filler with stupid people, i figured it would actually rally people against us. that cbs clip blew me away. i need to ***** and i need to do it right now. this is sick.

I must be in the minority. I am a retailer. Got my first ocellaris in today, since before the movie came out (did that on purpose - "just in case" we got the "nemo crowd" in, to avoid the temptation)... I did have some regal tangs, were ordered for several established hobbyists who wanted them. But I digress...

I have not had a single would-be customer come in looking for a 5 gallon tank and 10 Nemos "as seen on TV". I have not had panicked phone calls from parents whose children were "flushing Nemo" I have not had anybody call because their kid threw table salt in the freshwater tank to prepare it for Nemo...

Are the people around here just more intelligent than the rest, or did the media and the hobbyist community create a whole lot of "hype" about Nemo?

Yeah, every kid that has come through the door has pointed to the Ocellaris pair that I've had for a year or so, and said, "Nemo!" and the pair of blue tangs that I bought from another hobbyist (that she had for 4 years and I've cared for for a year...) and yell "Dory!" but nobody has even hinted at starting up a tank just for this purpose.

I dunno - I think it's a lot of hype.

Of course I haven't gone to one of those big chain stores lately either.

Jenn,
Same here . No one has even mentioned getting a "nemo" tank,
(which I wouldnt allow anyway ),
but then again,
most of my customers already have a pair of tank raised ORA ones .

I have had customers rave about how cute the movie was ,
and I have replied with the problems it contained and the aftermath.

No, I have not seen the movie-dont plan to,
but have read enough here and heard enough from the customers about it.
(edited so one does not have to scroll )

Yeah, I think to a large degree we are just looking for something to worry about. I'd be more worried about misguided morning television shows and unscrupulous livestock dealers.
