My yellow tang did something last night that it has never done before. I was moving some of my newly purchased snails from the sand bed to the live rock and my tang came up, spread its fins out and backed up to my hand. At first I thought that it was looking for a fight, but then it slowly rubbed up against my hand, almost like a caress.

The fish is fat and healthy, and he doesn't seem to be scratching on the rock or anything.

I have had him over 2 years, but he spent a couple of months at another aquarist's house while my tank cycled after moving to Indy from Tennessee.

Anyone experience similar behaviour? Any ideas as to why suddenly the fish is doing this? Is the fish getting "jiggy wit it" on my hand?

If he was backing up towards you with his fins spread I would think he was getting prepared to knive you in case you made an aggressive move towards him.

I will have to shoot some video. Today he actually let me put my hand completely around his body (I did this lightly and he rubbed his body against my hand.)

either he loves you or he's hoping you'll 'clean' him. i have a tang and my cleaner shrimp is his best buddy. well, when the tang feels like it of course.

esmithiii,

a neon goby will be perfect for your tang and any other fish you might have. i have had mine for over one year. my purple tang frequently stops to be checked out. i had bought a red coris the size of my neon, that was a funny sight to see, the neon trying to clean the coris. the coris would get tired of the neon and chase the neon off. anyways look into the neon.

good luck,
