Really simple question, but I'm sure there's a bunch of different answers. What is it about this hobby that keeps you interested, if not addicted?

:!: I've been an addict of 15+ years, and proud of it ;)

Yeah, but you didn't tell us why you are addicted.......

I am addicted because I have no other hobby, no job, no friends, no social life, no other special interests, no desire to watch TV, and mostly no life of my own.

I'm in it for the girls 8)

Really, I think it has a good deal to do with my interests in how life interacts with each other. The ability to recreate a small, functional ecosystem has enormous appeal to me. To be completely honest, I love playing god.

The interaction among the different life forms is the big thing with me. I actually have found my addiction increasing as the years have passed.

I'm in it for the girls

I am interested in this hobby because I got nothing better to do with my money.

I have always had fish tanks my whole life and I have progressed to having a reef aquarium now. I can sit in my chair and veg watching the fish, corals and etc. Relaxation.

I also have a boat, another rediculous expensive hobby.

Watching the corals, clams and other reef inhabitants grow gives me the most satisfaction. It's also cool to see non-reefers jaws drop when they see what you have accomplished.

I grew up by the sea in New England. I love the ocean I just can't tolerate cold weather though  so thats why I love my TROPICAL reef tank.

Plus you get to learn a little chemistry (read salt in eyes), plumbing (read wet floor), physics (read full 5g buckets dont balance well), electrical (read electrical shock) What could be more exciting than that?

It's really odd .... I've found most ppl feel strangely at home around the ocean, almost like a primal call.

I think I like the stress.

I had a very successful/stable system in university. Ever since then, it's been a plague of small problems. I long for the simple and effective system that I had in school.

Actually, Now that I have money, I've bought so many gadgets that it over-complicates things. The desire to have a successful system (again) keeps me going.

And I like to buy equipment :D

I was always interested in the ocean since I was a small child. I always enjoyed seeing any documentarys on sea life that might show on TV, which was hardly often enough. Now i can sit and stare at my tank all I want.

I do enjoy maintianing it too. It gives me something to do. I just really enjoy this hobby. Been in for nearly 3 years now, and can't imagine ever gettin back out of it.

Len you said in your first post that's an ADDICTION.

Danm right it is. I ove the beauty of my tank. Even when it looks really bad. I love seeing new thingd sprout on my rocks, and watching all the animals in my tank. I have watched a snail clean the glass for hours. I like looking in the sides I don't normally, and see what's been going on there since I last looked.

I don't like spending the money I do on my tank. Especially since I am unemployed for the next two weeks. But hey, when you finally find that 1 1/2" purple firefish at Petco, you have to buy it. (I've been looking since I set up my tank.) No, I didn't need that fish, but hey, Bills aren't due this week!

I also love the gear, and the dream of what my next tank will be. NOt even my final tank, but my next tank. (I'm thinking 46 gal bowfront!)

I am in the US Navy and through that I have been able to dive all over the world. And it is so awsome that I can maintain and cherish in my home most of what I have seen in my diving adventures.

P.S. Aquariums are also a good way to get woman to come over for a visit..lol

That's an interesting question. I have had some sort of tank all my life. It started when my older brother had a small tank when I was a kid. He lost interest and I couldn't stop goofing around with his tank.

I guess it all has to do with keeping this little piece of the ocean where by all accounts it has no right being. I also love setting up a new tank.

There's something about starting fresh and trying to do everything right for a change. By the way, that hasn't happened yet. :)
