I was at a LFS today that recently started handling Marine Fish.

I delete this post ( edited it) because it does me no good to *****.

Nope...not sure I know that much.

They may know way more than me.

First of all, I am not saying I know a lot. I just get irritated when I see expensive fish suffering, then dieing and then going to waste. I guess I caught that attitude after spending time on this forum.

I have a hard time understanding how a place like Johnstown Pa never had more than one Saltwater Store with very few fish now has a store with about as much fish as the Baltamore aquarium. (exageration but correct in a relative sense)

They probably know way more than me because they have the resources, time and $ to put into it. But what I saw yesterday was a store that looks like they are trying to outclass the compition (ego war) and the fish and corals, etc are going to suffer from it.

After spotting a fish that was dying, I started looking closer and noticed the same white slime on all the fish in the same tank section.

I asked if she was going to pull the dying fish out. She said " I can't flush a fish, I won't do that until he is dead".

Ever hear of quarantine?

She said "I'm not worried about it, we have a UV sterilizer".

Irresponsibility is not only bad for the rest of the fish that are going to get sick but also bad for the unsuspecting customer who buys something and contaminates his tank.

Unfortunatly Jethro, there are alot of stores like this.

Sometimes they get better with time as the system "ages" as the employees learn, sometimes not.

I have found that offering advice just makes you not welcome anymore LOL!

The best thing I think you can do is only buy things at stores that have an acceptable level of care for thier animals and hope the bad ones go out of business, as they usually do.

Let me guess, it was Gittler's? I was there for the first time to checkout the SW section. My friends grandmother use to own the old store a long time ago (where the name came from). Her grandmother said they moved several months ago and setup a SW section. It was nice to see a wide assortment of Livestock but everything was dead or dying! The poor cowfishes were so white from ick it wasnt funny. I'm glad i dont live anywhere near there or i would of flipped on them. I bought some frozen food and left. A 7 year old kid rang me up so you can see the quality of help this place has!

You nailed it.

I hate to be negative or spread negative about stuff. It is nice to have a place in the area that sells fish. However, I wonder how long some of the stuff they are selling will live. I was showed a batfish a french angel, and a stingray yesterday. I said " hopefully they will be bought by someone who has a large tank and knows how to take care of them".

I just got a reply that wasn't finished. "Well if they don't sell they will..."

They are nice people though.

There is one girl that works there that is very nice. She seems to have a keen interest in the hobby. She and I talked a bit and she said " you have to take chances if you want to have a store like this". I kind of see her point but I don't agree.

That kind of stuff should be special order. Some brat is going to buy it and stick it in his 10 gallon tank and then it will be dead in a few days.
