I just want to relate my annoyingly bad Live Rock & Sand purchase experience.

I called Jeff's Exotic Fish about getting 40lbs of each, and the rep. on the phone was extremely rude and unhelpeful. He tried to convince me to get rock I didn't want (Tonga branch) He told me shipping would be $120 for the stuff. Only when I explicitly asked about air freight did he say that it was available, cheaper, and faster than Fedex. Sheesh. What a moron.

So, he says he'll place my order, and give me a call when it ships out, so I can go down and pick it up on the right flight. Ideally, this would mean under 2 hours door-to-door. Well, I got no call, and when I called them at 6:05pm (they close at 6) there was no one there to answer. I left a reasonably frantic message, and got no reply.

I called early the next morning, and they said "oh yeah, of course your order went out yesterday" So, it turns out the stuff was sitting in the air fraight shipping area overnight, completely dry. I was about to reject the order when I convinced myself that at that point I'm still better off than what I would have had with Fedex. (now I'm thinking that I was wrong)

I bring the stuff home, open the box, and holy crap does it smell in there. I got everything cleaned up, put in my tank, and its doing fine, but its essentially just rock. Really expensive, crappy smelling, full of detritus rock.

Its been 2 weeks and I've not seen a single hitchhiker, save for a few sponges that I'm not sure are actually alive. No 'pods, no snails, no algae, no worms, no nothing.

This is not what I was expecting from "Ultra Premium Fiji"

Don't get live rock from Jeff's Exotic Fish. The sand I got was fine, but doesn't seem to be anything more than just sand. No worms or other stuff to speak of.

P.S. I chose them because I had a previous order with them (2 years ago) that came out very well. Now I'm sure their quality has gone dramatically downhill.

Try calling Jeff himself ( he is there I have spoken with him before) and tell him what happened and how you were treated. When I talk to him he seems like a nice guy and says he can hook me up on a deal.

Cant get upset when you havent given the manager/owner a chance to right the wrong. If you talk to management and still arent happy let us know and we will boycott his arse lol

I think most people go with FEDEX early overnight , so thats most likely why he went that route to begin with.

When you get stuff sent that way it can be packed and sent out at 7 pm to arrive next morning by 9am. Thats pretty fast. Allot of places also get this rock transshipped in the 40 lbs boxs and it sits dry in the carton untill it is sold.

Thats why IMO you need to find a retailer with a high turnover in live rock like ffexpress so you know it hadnt been out for weeks.

Really good rock. A touch expensive, but it's worth it to have precured rock covered in coralline algae and other hitchikers that is sealed in plastic bags rather than shipped dry with a couple newspapers.

I also think you should at least try to let the management right their wrong...

Unfortunately, I feel like its been a bit too long to complain and really get anything out of it. I'm approaching 3 weeks now. Oh well. I'll ponder it some more and maybe just call him up to let him know that I'm not very happy, and see what happens.

So, some related questions:

- For normal live rock, how long does it take for the 'pod population explosion? I think I may be scrod in this respect, as I've had to scrub the rocks clean to keep my tank in reasonable shape.

- For my tank, how should I go about re-seeding? I'm contemplating adding 1 piece of fairly small (softball sized) high-quality pre-cured Harbor Aquatics rock, as well as a standard "detrivore kit" (ipsf.com or inlandaquatics.com) to get some more goodies going.

Anything else?

Hmmm interesting...

I concur with all the others - before you berate a business, at least give them a chance to right a PERCEIVED wrong.

Sounds to me like the rock you received is typical of uncured rock (or rock that needs to re-cure). I'm sure there are lots of pods and worms in it - I've had shipments take the "scenic route" and do just fine.

Why not take a pot shot at the airline? I'd be willing to bet that the air bill says NOA or NOTIFY ON ARRIVAL with your name and phone number, and they probably "forgot" to call you. Even if your etailer forgot to contact you, the airline is supposed to notify receipients of perishable freight.

Be patient with the rock - I have seen rock lost in the airline system for a week, come back teeming with life.

I still think you should call the etailer and at least do him the COURTESY of letting him know your displeasure. How is he supposed to fix problems if he's not aware of them.

He's got a good enough reputation in this industry that I don't think your experience was typical - and I'm not a fan of etail (I'm a retailer), but I have respect for those who run a decent operation.

FYI - I bought a 9 fer 99 from jeffs early last month and was very happy with it - fed ex was late and I called them to double check on tracking and the guy who answered was extremely nice and helpful. Sorry you had a bad experience but it was nothing like mine.
