SCOTIA, N.Y. - A 17-year-old goldfish can swim again thanks to a bunch of do-gooding humans.

Customers at the Sky Port diner near Schenectady came up with the idea of a creating a fish sling after Dick the goldfish fell ill in November and had difficulty swimming.

Patty Sherman, who owns the diner with her two sisters, Joanna Dewey and Mary Ann Parker, said Dick could barely move across the bottom of his fish tank located behind the counter.

A customer whose daughter is studying to be a veterinarian had his daughter research fish ailments. She reported back that Dick was likely suffering from swim bladder disease and prescribed a diet of cooked peas to be hand fed to Dick three times a day, Sherman said.

To remedy Dick's swimming problem, several customers devised a sling made up of fishing bobbers, drinking straws, gauze and string. When the 8-inch-long fish is placed in the sling, he's able to swim like normal.

Sherman said customers find it relaxing to sit at the counter and watch Dick in his tank.

"Everybody's rooting for him," she said Tuesday. "He's the topic of conversation at the Sky Port."

cooked peas for a potentially bacterial swim bladder infection> hey if the vet says so.... other than that the sling seemed cool, It would make a neat avatar. Im going to make a tiny arm sling for my poison arrow frog (Ill title it "rough day in the jungle" and use this as an avatar)...thanks for the idea! :)

Maybe Willis should of thought of this when Arnold's fish fell ill instead of switching it out with a different one on "Different Strokes".

You guys know what I'm talking about!

Yep, I saw the story on the nightly news. Old Dick looks a little worse for wear but hanging in there. I think he may be blind in both eyes from what I could see. The owner holds him while feeding the crushed peas and he's snapping away trying to eat. Actually I used to feed my fw mollies and platys skinned, cooked peas once a week, they ate it all. :D

Oh the possible jokes with the words:

Dick
Sling
Peas
Fishtank

And this quote....OH MY!

"Sherman said customers find it relaxing to sit at the counter and watch Dick in his tank."

I'll probably get banned for this but if I didn't someone would.

Dick could easily have another ten years in him. Swim bladder troubles are quite common in fancy goldies, especially those with the fat, shortened bodies. Most often it has nothing at all to do with infection (quite rarely, actually), but EVERYTHING to do with diet. Most likely Dick has been being fed flake at the surface of the water, or even pellets. It's only a matter of time til they develop this trouble (especially common with ryukins, lionheads, celestials, moors, and the like).

I always recommend that folks with goldies feed them diets rich in green vegetable matter to help prevent these problems. They are often worse when the fish is fed any floating foods, such as pellets. My own recommendation, though, is not cooked peas, but frozen petit peas squeezed out of their skins (the cellulose is just too much for their malformed digestive systems).

Just ask me 'bout f/w! Or horses. Or pigs. Or teenage BOYS! LOULE!!

Dick is a curious name for a fish.

I'm glad dick is feeling better. Nothing worse than a sick dick. 8O
