Fisher's was an importer-wholesaler in Chicago. I don't know how long they stayed in business but they were gone by 1979.

This catalog is from 1968, and is from my collection.

Let's see: "I'll take a yellow and blue tang, 1 of each angel, but can you send me 4 of the queen. And I want 4 queen triggers, 1 of every wrasse, and on the anemone, do you have rose, I want a couple of those. And while I'm at it, give me 3 each of the perculas and the maroons in the show size. Can you tell me how much shipping will be? "

Seems pretty expensive for 35 years ago, except for the $5.00 sea turtle.

That's what I was thinking. Adjusted for inflation I bet a lot of those prices are higher than today's retail prices, and those are wholesale.

Keep this stuff coming John, it is good entertainment.

Marine fish wholesale prices were often much higher then, this is true for retail as well. I remember seeing $500 Clown triggerfish when I was a kid in the early 70's. In many books the Clown trigger is described as the most expensive fish. I remember $200 Moorish Idols as well.

The marine hobby had not geared up yet for mass production. Today, millions of fish are exported from the Philippines alone. Air freight is more accessible now too. From an economic perspective, the expansion of the hobby in the late 70's-80's brought about much demand and the business competition that goes with it.

The sea turtle is the real standout. All sea turtles are now protected by CITES as Appendix I Endangered Species. They cannot be sold in any commercial sense. I remember seeing them for sale in the 70's. Funny though, when I was in Manila, Philippines in February I saw a baby sea turtle for sale in a retail aquarium shop. I also saw many many hundreds of awesome wild-harvested live coral colonies for sale there too, all illegal, as corals are fully protected in the Philippines.
