OK, I have had my lights for 2 weeks now, and I've had an explosion of purple, turquoise, orange, and dark purple coralline growth on the rock, the diatoms are virtually non-existent, and I haven't had any blooms of hair algae or other evil stuff (knock on wood). I assume it is normal for the diatoms to be replaced by green algae on the glass. Nothing has died in the past 4 weeks. Do you think I'm ready to add the first coral? I'll bring my water to be tested first. Thanks! :D

You were talking about getting a new skimmer, (Remora?) did you do that? Has it been running? Is it skimming well?

Wow.. turquoise? That is excellent! Yes, it's normal for the diatoms to be replaced by other growth, this is exactly what you want, the balance has been struck in favor of the non-nuisance growth.

When you say "nothing has died" do you mean vertebrate life? Often we can experience quite frustrating fish deaths and our invertebrate life is doing just peachy. Unfortunately, even most really good fish shops can't test for the stuff that may be doing in the fish, so it's difficult to tell, and time may be the prudent course.

I think you may indeed be ready for your first coral (I'd suggest something inexpensive that easily replicates itself, such as mushies)... WHAT?? You don't have your own test kit?? Darlin', get your own test kit, ASAP, mkay? :P

I will look into a test kit the same day I get my water tested! :D

Yes, the turquosie is quite cool!

Nothing, meaning vertebrate or invertebrate, has died in the past month. :D :D Definite plus. I haven't gotten the Remora yet, will be looking into that further, but the price is high and I'm not quite back up there yet! :D
