I have gone thru two Rios in the last year using them strictly to mix my new saltwater. My local fish store recommended a CAP-1800 made by Aqua Clear Aquatics. It has lasted around five weeks and is now causing by GFCI to kick off as soon as I plug the pump in. Hopefully they will take it back for an exchange when I go in tomorrow. :?: What type of pumps do some of you use? I basically mix around 15 gallons of saltwater at a time.

I use a cheapo pump I got for 10 bucks Don't remember the name

If you add the salt slowly, the pump doesn't have to chew through it.

i use a maxi-jet 400 to mix my salt water with. been running 24/7 for 3 months with no problems at all. mine runs constantly cause i keep at least 15-20 gallons on hand at all times, sure saves having to mix in a hurry during emergencies.

I've been using a Hagen 802 Powerhead for small mixes (5 to 15 gallons) and use a RIO 2500 for larger mixes (35 gallons or so). Water is typically clear in under 30 minutes. Been using this combo for about 3 years now. Haven't failed yet.

Maxi-jets are inexpensive, quiet, efficient and extremely durable. I would never use anything else.

you have to use a pump? can't I just use a big ole spoon or something to stir the water up in the vat?

you can but it is better to let the water mix for at least 24 hours and a powerhead sure beats a wooden spoon for that length of time
