I need to buy some new lights for my aquarium and I was wondering if anyone could suggest something. I need four fluorecent tubes for a 33 gallon that has a xenia coral, two pink tipped anemones and some macro Algae. I know what the local pet stores want to sell me but I was wondering if anyone, who isn't trying to get my money, could actually suggest something helpful.

Thanks
Jay

Jay-

What do you hope to keep long-term? Normal Output (NO) florescent tubes will not be enough to keep what you described. You will need VHO (Very High Output) bulbs or PC (Power Compact) bulbs at the very least. Both require a special ballast.

How long is your tank?

The 33g is 48 long, same foot print as a 55, just shorter.

I have the same tank, and hit the same problem, NO just isn't going to do it long run. I went with a 2x65 PC 50/50 setup, just took off the old light bar and replaced it with the PCs. If I had it to do over, I'd have gone with either the 4x65 or a 2x96.

No matter how much light you have, sooner or later you will want more.
