hey guys, i just have a quick question maybe someone can answer and or illustrate how this can be done...

i have my actnics setup about 8" off the water line same goes for my halides... i was thinking that its better to have the actnics as close to the water as possible... should i just leave it alone and let it be or should i try to make something so when i have to access the tank i can simply pull on something and they go up and down... anyone know if this will work and know how to do this ....

TIA....

I use T5s for actinics and they are right up on the water, maybe 2 inches above the water line MAX. My halides are about 8 inches. Having the T5s so low is great for obvious reasons but it also keeps me from sticking my hand in the tank (done that way on purpose). :)

inverse square law.

Half the distance is twice the light.

So if you drop them from 8" to 2" you'll get 4x the light.

Is it better? Maybe. If the lights there make you keep your hands out of the tank (AKA fred's plan) it's worth it.

If your lights get wet and short out your ballast box, tripping the breaker, and shutting off everything, it's not so good.

Make sure your fixture is waterproof if you're putting it that close.

Try to lower your canopy. I believe Ronen has the MH and T-5 at different levels.

Ronen doesnt mess with his tank like other ppl :)

and no i dont have my lights in diff levels ,I havent changed or moved anythign in my tank for over a year now ,andi use aqua tongs for everything ,so my hands are not in the water at all ,if they do ,i just get a bag that i pack corals up with and slip it over my hand ,Instant glove :D

As far as the lighing gos ,I dont think it will make that much of a diff ,youre using actinic to get your corals used to light and not have the bright MH just trun on them . If your use 54w T5 then i will dout 2 or so bulbs will make the diff ,If you had 10 t5 bulbs then i would drop them ,Other wise go enjoy your tank shees :smash:
