Hi,

I'm setting up a new 29g with a Remora, and would like to place the heater in the skimmer itself. Has anyone else done this?

I have the drain modification for the overflow, which means there's a slot in the right side wall to accomidate the drain, and should be enough to fit the electrical cord for the heater as well.

Any advice appreciated.

This is often done for BakPak skimmer, but I guess you can do it on a Remora too.

I've seen this done before. The heater was placed on the return side and the power cord simply came out of the spillway hole. To be honest, the idea scares me a little since bubbles around a glass heater is a dangerous proposition. If you can get a titanium probe heater, it'll probably be safer.

Hmmmm.

I haven't seen it running yet, but I presume from the design that the area leading to the return has little or very few bubbles in it. Is this not true?

On a related note, does anybody know of a less garish heater? What I'm thinking of is something exactly like a typical heater, but made of black smoked glass instead of clear.

You will get bubbles in the last chamber - especially when the skimmer is new or after you clean it.

I second the recommendation for the titanium heater. Also, there is an added benefit with the Won titanium heaters of having the temp control on the plug. With a conventional glass heater (adjustment knob on top) it can be tough to make adjustments with the heater inside the skimmer. With the Won you don't have this problem.
