When I did mine, I added about 2" of CaribSea Aragamax Sugar-Sized Sand (oolitic) to the bottom and then layered on 1" of CaribSea Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand on top. No mixing at all.
When I setup my next tank, I'd do something similar: oolitic aragonite on the bottom with a top dressing of a larger particle size -- maybe either Florida Crushed Coral, Geo-Marine Formula or the Seaflor Super Reef product. The main reason for the larger particlesize for my new tank is that the tank is an 80 gal tank with dimensions of 4'x2'x16" tall. It's pretty shallow and I want to make sure I don't blow my sandbed around w/ the surge devices, wavemaker, etc, I plan to put on the tank.
I have about an inch of Southdown in the tank, and 8 inches of mostly southdown mixed with some other random sand types, a tad of smaller crushed coral.
