Anyone keep a lionfish in their reef tank? I currently have two ocellaris clowns, a blue tank and a sleeper goby. I was thinking maybe a fu manchu lionfish as they only grow to be quite small. Would it get along with my current fish or try to eat them?

The only problem with lions and reefs is that most of the other reef safe fishes are considered lunch.

People have set up predator reefs, I think, but in your tank I don't think a lionfish would work. :D

heh-kiss the clowns, and maybe the goby, goodbye, most likely

lions appear to have a deceptively small mouth

Well if you could get the Fu to eat to begin with you might have issues, errr probably will have issues with the other fish and them becoming lunch. Lions have really big mouths even the smaller ones. Conversly if you are trying to get your Fu Man Choo to eat having snacksized fish like yours in there might be a good idea.

I don't understand why not. Certainly the larger lions would be a bad choice with those fish, but a Fu Manchu lion only gets 3-4" max size. Hardly a threat to any but the very smallest fish.

Hmmm....well an adult fu manchu can dispatch a chromis damsel, an adult majenta dottyback, a small royal gramma, many gobies, small clowns, etc.

Plus, as already indicated, getting them to eat is a PITA.

Cheers

I have a dwarf lion in my 220 gallon (Dendrochirus zebra) great little fish - not an active swimmer and I had him eating frozen food within days of being in quarantine. He has grown very fast though and I set up his own tank for him (45 gallon) and possibly a fuzzy dwarf. If I didn't have some fish that are now approaching bite size in the tank (neon goby, watchman goby) I'd leave him.
