Hard sand bed? Why?

Is it due to too much calcium? Last I checked calcium was around 430.

The sand bed is kinda like the "dirt bombs" we use to play with as kids. I broke up as much of it as I can reach to. Im sure my starfish will be happy now that there is sand he can actualy burrow in.

Any ideas friends?

How old is the sandbed? I've heard of this happening. Just one of those things that happens to old sandbeds, from what I understand.

I can be algal growth on the sand that cement the particles together, or just calcium in the water like you said. I don't really think it is something that you need to be too concern about.... <finger crossed>

Are you dripping kalkwasser by chance?

I don't drip Kalk, bought some recently but havent opened it up yet. I have recently added extra calcium to get my calcium levels up.

I have recently had a problem with cyano that was on my sand bed and partially on m,y rocks but I used CHEMI-CLEAN and also siphoned it out so cyano wasnt really a problem...

Also,

My original 2 inches or so of sand bed are about 2 years old but I recently added some new reef sand on top, about another 2 inches or so.

I rinsed it with fresh RO water before adding to the tank and not saltwater, could this be why?
