My elegance coral is started spitting out a translucent gooey substance with brown chunks in it. It is spitting it out of only one of it's mouths. I can't figure out what it is doing so i figured someone here could help me out. If someone could give some input i would really appreciate it.

Welcome to the board!

It's possible it might be ejecting extra zooanthellae which is a sign of a recent lighting change perhaps?

The event in and of itself is nothing to worry about, provide you know why and expect it. It's a sign the coral is adapting to its environment (good or bad is a different issue).

hey thanks for the input. My coral reciently switched from metal halide lighting to pc. I am hoping that the elegance will survive because i have been reading that reciently this type of coral has been collected from deeper waters and is not a likely to live. I have it in the sand in medium water flow but does anyone have any tips for keeping elegance corals?

Hi there,

I had a smallish one for a little bit, and it thrived (shortly) on low current. I have pc lighting. But like you, I read the same things and sure enough, it pooped out on me. It did spew some of the same stuff you're talking about, but I don't think that's particularly weird for it to do. However, eventually it just started puffing up more and more, to the point that I was kinda freaking out because it looked like it was having an allergic reaction (all the while my water remains exactly the same). I read that it was normal for it to puff up several times a day, for various reasons. But then, it started to die.

I like to think it wasn't entirely my fault tho, based on my tests and what I've read online. My water was perfect and my other corals were doing great.

Good luck with yours.
