Ok, have had kole for about 2 weeks. Was getting beat down by my big tomato clown. Moved tomato, now he has some type of growths. Ignore tail fin that's growing back nicely.
Here are 2 pics of the issues. One pic shows left fin with a white growth on it(ignore little spots, dirty glass). 2nd pic shows the major concern. Almost looks like sores to me. Bacterial, fungul yadda yadda. I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS! :?: He/She is active eating like a cow. Swimming like the tank was a 500g.

I can't tell if it's fungus or a bacterial infection. Bacterial infections are more common place, but such white growth can also be indicative of fungus. If it's bacterial, a broad spectrum antibiotic like neomycin or erythromycin in a quarentine tank may work. If it's fungal, a formalin bath (again, in a seperate holding facilty) can do the trick.

People like TerryB probably can offer more insight.

If this is a q/t the tang is in, some methylene blue WON'T hurt. Enough to stain the water a strong blue.

Hope you don't mind me hitching in but can you really put methylene blue in a QT without any detriment to the nitrifying bacteria?

Well, if he's going to have to treat anyway, are we really worried about nitrifying bacteria here?

And no, I absolutely do NOT mind you "hitching in"! Please, offer up your advice, your questions, et al! :)

Welcome to reefs.org, moonraker. Who is numbah one? ;) (Sorry, mate, I know more about "The Prisoner" than I do about Bond, James Bond.)

A QT tank should have no nitrifying bacteria to be of concern, it should be a bare bottomed tank with hard objects, easily cleaned. Its for treating and holding fish, not creating an ecosystem. They rely on water changes for cleanliness.

You can try to treat, but first I'd like to know if it appears the spots are really growths or are they just white areas of smooth skin? Second, are they expanding at all?

There's a possibility its just newly healed zone around previous wounds where scales may or may not return. If it is expanding, I'd try a medicated treatment (in a QT/hospital tank). If its eating and seemingly healthy and the spots have not evolved, a cleaner shimp might do the trick for you.
