Such a shame about your firefish Dew, they really are beautiful.
I have kept fish for years and in an old 2ft freshwater tank I have community fish. I had cleaned it out one day and then later thought 'funny, the female swordtail isn't about'.
Looked and looked but she was nowhere. Then after a while I, for some unknown reason thought I'd look under the rug near the fishtank. There she was, underneath, in the middle!! (about 6ins from where my huge dog had just been lying!)
Now this fish must have been out of the water for at least an hour. No sign of life but I scooped her up and chucked her back in, just on the off-chance and low and behold, she does a little shimmy and swims off!!!
She lived for a good couple of years after that! I always stick fish back in these days... just incase!
