I have reciently built a sump for my 20h reef tank. I am planning on putting sand, live rock, and some sort of macro algae in the sump. What would be the best plant to put down there that would grow well and reduce my nitrates? does anyone who has done this type of sump before have some pointers?

Yeah, the caulerpa that looks like big blades of grass is very hardy, as is the "grape" looking caulerpa.

If you live in California, we never had this conversation.

Chaetomorpha (Spaghetti) macro. Looks like a brillo pad. Won't go sexual and is just as good at nutrient export.

I didn't tell you this, but Caulerpa is pretty easy to come by in California if you know the right people. I'm not sure if it's legal to possess it, or just to buy it. In any case, lots of people still have it growing like crazy and will give you some.

Having said that, I like the look of Caulerpa racemosa. Gracillaria is cool too, and tangs love to eat it when it needs cropped.

Don't mess with caulerpa if you can get chaetomorpha!
- Problem free, never dies and pollutes the water
- grows in any light
- doesn't send down holdfasts and this won't yank up your substrate when you pull it out

I just have a huge ball of it that floats in my sump- threw out 5 gallons last week!
