Got this 4" Crosshatch by MO yesterday and it came in with a pretty sunken belly (hopefully you can see it in the attatched image). Don't know whether this has reached the muscular stage yet but so far, the fish has not eaten this mornings offering of PE Mysis (soaked in Selcon) and Formula One. The 'good' news is that it is currently in quarantine and also it seems quite reactive to outside stimuli at this point. Questions: Is the fish "too far gone, IYO, and if not, what would be the best starter foods for it? Thanks in advance.

These guys are kinda shy for the first few days. Just let her browse around for at least a couple of days. Don't worry, once tshe adjust to the new home she'll take food from your hand. It's a she from the coloration.

Keep us informed and good luck.

I feed mine a varity of foods: the favorite was frozen raw shrimp from the grocery store, cut up into bit size pieces.

Success!!! A 'combo plate' of chopped fresh shrimp and Cyclop-eeze finally did the trick. And what's almost as good is that I didn't even have to leave the house to get this stuff since, coincidentally, my wife had just bought the shrimp as appitizers to serve a few of her friends who came by yesterday evening. Anyway, since I'm no longer allowed in the bedroom for awhile, I thought I'd post early and let everyone know what finally worked. Soon, hopefully, I can wean the fish over to the Selcon soaked Mysis and get her filled out before introducing her to the reeftank. Any other problems not withstanding, I plan to keep 'her' QT'ed for about three weeks. I'll keep you all informed of the progress.

Oh, and thanks, btw, for all of your suggestions and good wishes.

I was going to suggest fresh shrimp, clam on the half-shell, and chopped krill. The fish should fill out once it begins eating heartily. It looks like a nice specimen. I have two in my reef tank and I really enjoy them. Good luck.

Thanks Greg. Actually, your article in AA was pretty influential in my decision to seek out one of these fish. And finding a small one was a loooooong time coming. My question however concerns introduction into the reeftank. I noticed in the article you mentioned that your Crosshatch was greeted somewhat 'rudely' by one of your tangs. As you know, I happen to be the proud owner of Attila: Sohal Extraodinaire and Supreme A*****e of The Known Tang Universe. Anyway, did your tang just evenually stop pestering your trigger on its own or did the trigger have to 'stand its ground' to effect change? I doubt seriously that Attlila would ever stop harrassing a completely submissive new tankmate.

It's difficult to predict the behavior of fish in reef aquariums. I would expect that any harassing by the Sohal tang will die down after a few days. Tangs are generally not persistent with other genera. Wrasses, on the other hand, can be relentless in their quest to expel an "intruder" from their territory. I also wouldn't be surprised if you told me that the Sohal paid no attention to the trigger.
