I'd just like to hear from any reefs.org members that have any experience using Sun Aquatics bulbs. I'm considering purchasing their 250 Watts 14000K HQI bulb.

I believe at this point, they have only been marketing their bulbs and will be gearing up to launch a complete line of reef products in the near future. Here's an excerpt from their company newsletter,

"We are of the opinion that the products used in the hobby are sold at exhorbitant prices in view of the end use and due to extreme markup by middlemen and distribution network. We are negotiating with Manufacturers directly to help reduce the cost, using our buying power.

Our company was founded with one primary vision "Qualtiy products at the lowest price possible". Since we do not believe in wasting money on expensive ad campaign, we solicit your help in spreading the news about the quality of our products and our goals."

I guess by skipping the middleman, they can be some kind of WalMart for reefers.

well, I bought 2 x 400w ballasts and 2 400w 10k bulbs from him... came fast, work great :)

Oh, did I mention it all came out to less then 1 ballast would cost regularily?

Happy camper here... and my corals have all livened up in colouration - before I had 2x250W mh with ushi 10k bulbs.

The XM10k IS impressive, but does it maintain output like that over the year or so of use?

No idea. That's something that would be worth testing.

The SUN bulb held it's own against the Ushios and ABs of the world and at 40 bux shipped on ebay.....

By this I assume you have PAR vs. time data for this bulb somewhere since you mention that it held its own against AB's and Ushio's. A URL would be appreciated.

I think the SUN10K deserve a closer look. I felt it had really nice color and great PAR. Performed in the top 5 in almost every test. Looking at the lamp, it seems to be well constructed. I would like to see how it maintains it color as well as how it lasts in the long run. But if someone is looking of a lamp to try, I would say go for it.

As far as holding it's own against the AB and Ushio, in new bulb compairisons the SUN outperforms them on almost every ballast with the exception of the PFO Standard ballast.

My main thing is finding something that has comparable PAR to an Iwasaki bulb on a standard PFO ballast, which is why I'm looking at the XM bulbs. Plus Hellolights.com has them for $65 which is only $10 more than the Iwasaki's.

In that case the XM10K is probably a good fit. I have spoken to some people who are very pleased with the lamps. They have been using them about 6 months and swapped out Iwasaki lamps for the XM.

My frend bought a 175 watt version of the 10K for $50 Cdn (~$37 US). I'll let you know what he thinks after the burn in. So far he says it's pretty blue.

Cheers,
