Wade,
I understand your point of view. However, you are making an assumption that hyposalinity therapy (properly administered) is highly stressful to fish. I do not agree with this as a premise to discussion. I don't think that we can limit hyposalinity therapy as valid only for parasites either.

I'm going to swing by Joe Cech's office this week and see if I can get an opinion on all of this. Very interesting discussion guys.

Hi Matt,
He may not be intimately familar with the subject. Ask him is he has read the following reports.
The stress of handling and transport induces the release of “stress hormones” into the blood stream. This in turn causes difficulties in maintaining internal osmotic balance. This is counteracted by salinity manipulation. The addition of salt to freshwater, or conversely reducing the salinity for marine species, is effective in reducing osmoregulatory dysfunction and other physiological responses to stress (Johnson & Metcalf, 1982. McDonald & Milligan, 1997). This will reduce mortalities caused by shipping stress (Tomasso et.al, 1980. McDonald & Milligan, 1997). Most of the losses are due to osmoregulatory dysfunction and stress-mediated diseases occurring within the first week after transport (Johnson & Metcalf, 1982. Carmicheal et. al, 1984).
Cheers,

A great thread that deserves another read.

Personally, I hypo all fish for a month before going in my tank. They seem to thrive in hypo and I have never lost a fish that way.

In contrast, I have lost fish in a QT at regular SG.

I have also lost a fish to a freshwater dip, so I don't do them anymore. It is a serious shock to the fish's system, whereas hypo is reached gradually.

I find that hypo is safe, effective, and if done correctly, it can guarantee that you will not introduce external parasites into your aquarium with new fish.
