Does anybody use only deep sand bed in their "reef" tanks? I have a three tanks system (20-20-10) which are connected one another. One has live rocks, the other have deep sand bed and the third have macro algae. The one that appears to be working best is the deep sand bed. This system has a very slow current and 230watts PC as a light source. The corals appear to open up more and have much better coloration. Any opinion?

If all the tanks are connected it cant be the difference in water parameters that makes a difference in the corals. It has to be other factors, current or light. It makes no sence as they are all filtered by the marco, DSB and live rock as they are all connected.

At inland aquatics I saw a 55 gallon tank that was at least 3/4 full with sand. In the few inches of water at the top were some corals that looked like they were doing well.

I agree with Ben.

UNLESS there is very little flow between the tanks, the water is the same in all 3.

You have 230 watts of pc on a 20g tank?
