Frogspawn requirements

It is my understanding that Frogspawn requires medium light. My 75 is equipped with a CSL 2x175w MH w/2x65w pc actinic in a custom canopy. The mh bulbs are 2" from glass canopy on tank frame. The MH bulbs are brand new (what a difference from my 18 month old bulbs) Any way they are Hamilton true 10k. If frogspawn is placed in center of tank 1/2 way up would this be considered medium light or high light? Or should I just keep moving it until he appears most happy?

Your lights is fine for Frogspawns IMO. 1/2 way is a good place to start. If it doesn't extend fully, it may actually be too bright, in which case I recommend moving it down and a way a little. Conversely, if it starts losing its coloration, then you should give it more light.

Thanks Len, they wre fully extended on day 1 but today they were only 1/2 extended. If it does not extend tommorrow, I will move it down. Also, the frogspawn has 7 stalks (terminology?) I believe each individual stalk needs to acquire food correct? Nutrition from one stalk is not shared by all!

Nope, each stalk does not share digestive tracts with one another, so if you're feeding it, you'll have to feed each individually. But from my experience, frogspawns needn't be fed and I actually find it hard to get them to take food.

I agree, watched two stalks get some mysis shrimp that happened to land on it.

In my 75 I have 2 175w MH and a frogspawn that sits about midway. I have never had a problem with it under this light intensity. If the frogspawn is coming from a lower intensity then it may be affected at first. If this is the case, start lower and you can work your way up the rockwork as it acclimates to the new light if that is where you want to place it.

I have 175's on my 75 and my frog sits on the bottom and grows like a motha. I chop it up a couple of times a year and trade the frags in for $60 - $80 each time. I always keep 10 - 12 heads on the mother colony so that I always have a nice piece on display.

Thanks, I did move the frogspawn to center bottom. Polyps are not fully extended yet but am quessing its from all the moving around.

Current also affect extension fo these corals. More currens means less extension. My Frogspawn eats lots. Flakes, mysis, choped seafood, and anything that thouch him. The more he eat the faster he grow.

If I had MHs, I would put the frogspawn in the sand, like Louey.

They absorb things through the skeleton in the sand and it prevents algae from growing on the skeleton (they hate that).

IMO, you have so much light that there is no need to prop it up in the rock work...it looks impressive on sand too.

There is one small rock underneath my frogspawn that is there just to keep the heads off the sand.

I kept him in the same spot under 440 W's of VHO (4 X 110W). He didn't grow quite as fast, but grew fast none the less.
