or am I going about this the wrong way?
You're going about it the wrong way. Set a trap in a glass jar set so he can't get back out.
Then, research what you put in that gorgeous tank FIRST - the Sally Lightfoot crab is, to the best of my knowledge, at LEAST three different species of crab, two of the three get outrageously huge and destructive. Even the smallest of the three isn't such a charmer.
You know, if you have bright lights, halides specifically, the corraline will all turn a whitish gray fairly soon anyway. In my tank the corraline is only purple on the bottoms of the rocks or in shaded areas. It still grows on the walls etc, it just aint purple.
