Whenever looking at an aquarium stand, I always steer clear of anything made of laminated board (unless it's plywood). Odds are they used some sort of particleboard or medium density fiberboard to make the cabinet and then laminated a decorative wood paper or veneer onto the flat surfaces and edgebanded the edges. Hopefully they used a phenolic or MDI binder to bind the particleboard (or MDF) particles together as both of these binders are pretty water resistant. However, these binders are fairly expensive and if the stand is fairly cheap in the whole cost of the unit, they used a urea-formaldehyde binder instead. UF is dirt cheap, but it doesn't resist water well at all. Without looking at the stand, I couldn't tell you for certain tho what it is or what it is made of.
Considering who Shane works for, I'd wager a guess and say that he's likely THE most well-informed person around here when it comes to anything "wood".
