Hi everyone,

While I was away on vacation last month, something happened to my tank (I think the power was shut off) and everything died. When I got back, it was overgrown with algae, smelly, and previous live organisms were just white gooey clumps. I thought about going back to freshwater so siphoned out all the water and put the live rock (now dead rock) outside to dry. The live rock has been without heat and saltwater for about 3 weeks now. I've since cleaned up the tank completely and decided to stay with saltwater (couldn't imagine going back to fresh). I would like to reuse the rock. My question is, how should I go about cleaning up the rock? Also, is this sufficient time to have totally killed off all the valonia or will they simply grow back from spores on the rocks? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

At this point I think if you go at the rock with a hose and a brush, it should clean up pretty quick. When you set up the tank, it will cycle again, so as long as you are ready for that, you shouldn't have a problem.

I would look at the rock and scrub off any valonia.
