Moving existing dsb to new refugium.....

Anyone have experience moving a dsb, or at least know the proper way to transfer the sand to it's new home? I'm assuming I should just fill the new fuge w/dead sand and add the top inch or so from my existing system. I'm worried that if I add the whole established bed I will wreak havoc on the tank(by mixing all the layers), but to be honest, I've never done this before, and I'm unsure. Any suggestions would be appreciated

oh, btw, the system is young, only 5 months or so old. The dsb has been running for about 3 months, if that makes any difference. I'm assuming a different procedure would be called for when moving an established bed...

Whenever I move my sandbed, I always ditch about 90% of it and save just a little bit to re-seed a completely new sandbed. I've seen how much crap can build up in there and there's no way I'd want to release all that detritus into the new system.

if it has only been up for three months i don't think i would worry all that much.
my new sand bed is prolly the same age and i have disturbed the hell out of it lately.
i would remove the livestock in the existing tank and just add the sand to the new refugium, then allow it settle for awhile.
i don't see the need for throwing any of it away.
