I have been using RO/DI water since the begining. The prefilters for the unit are relatively cheap, but the DI cartridges are kind of expensive and they add up quickly. I originally installed my unit with dual DI to be able to get the most out of them before having to change them, but even with that, I go through them fairly quickly. I mean, you you are evaporating 7-10 gpd and also making 50g water changes weekly, they go like nothing. It is not the RO memebrane, pressure, or anything else. It is just large volumes of processed water.

So far I have been getting them from ARS, but I was looking at a more cost effective alternative. I know the media in the cartridges I have now are replaceable, but where would one get it from?? Any ideas or suggestions??

Thanks

Shane:

What is IIRC?

yes, that is what I am looking for. A cheaper alternative to buying the filled cartridges. I'll look into it.

Thanks,

I also have good experience with the BuckeyeField on hardwares.... nice people.

>... As long as you store it in a dark, air tight container the refill will last up to one year.

The important thing is not air or light, but to make sure the resin never get dried out. I always store the resin slightly moist.

I order my DI refills from Airwaterandice.com it is very reasonable and saves me a lot of money . I think I get enough resin for 4 refills for $50 with two empty cartridges.

hmm... you guys see any difference in how long the resins last vs how long they lasted with say Spectrapure DI's? (based on TDS meter, not CC resins).

Each time I change the DI cart I wonder about the refills but I never noticed anyone recommending it.

Well, since starting this thread here and in other forums, I have found a vendor that has dropped their prices to be more compettitive with the site posted above. They are www.inreef.com

Their DI is the cheapest by a long shot and their prefilter cartridges are now the cheappest too. The only thing is that their carbon block prefilter is 10 microns and not the 1 micron I normally like to get.

I've been using resin depot mixed bed resins for over a year now. I bought a cubic foot of it and sold a bunch off and kept enough for myself. Just did that again about 2 months ago. Stuff works just fine, I keep an inline TDS meter on my system to monitor it.
For a full cubic foot bag, it's about $120 delivered to your door, you'll get about 35 refills out of that bag. Do the math, it's a great deal...Your local reef clubs should do group orders of the stuff.

Someone mentioned above that resin doesn't need to be kept in the dark. It's not absolutly necessary, but it is a way to maximize your chances of not having biological growth in the media.

So your best bet is to use an airtight, opaque container.
