Since ich is deep inside the body or gills a fresh water dip isn't going to do much. It may kill some of the ich, that is on the skin, but the ich is enbedded into the fish skin pretty good and a dip probably wouldn't have much effect. A fresh water bath of about 15-25 min, or as long as the fish can take it, may have more of an effective but even then not much. Also the fresh water dip/bath may do more harm to the fish, as it can really stress it out.

None of the method, copper, garlic, hypo, UV or fresh water dip/bathes are going to kill ich outright. The ich has to work it's way through the fish body or gills and then you can kill it.

I have heard and read that a freshwater dip is at least somewhat effective on some parasites, but it will also stress the fish out, and that is to be considered.

Garlic is a preventative, an immunity-booster - they do not serve the same purpose.

Garlic is something you do to help keep the fish healthy in the first place. It does not stress the fish out - it makes them stronger, and a strong healthy fish in a tank with good parameters will be able to fend off most parasites.

Parasites and fish usually live in equilibrium together unless and until the fish is stressed out. Then the parasites have a chance to overpower the fish. But evolutionarily speaking, it's better for the parasites as well as the fish to live in equilibrium...

Freshwater dip is a treatment.

Hope that helps! (and hope i'm not wrong - that's what i've read and what i understand...)

ich

every fish I have FW dipped has died - and not from the ich - 10 minute dip at the most, so, I would stay away, QT or let nature take it's course

key is to not get them with the parasites int he first place.

House
