I have a FOWLR (and some mushroom) for 3 years already, currently I have crushed coral as subrate and would like to switch to sand. (When I first brought the system, my LFS mark the system for salt water :x ). I intended to switch it into a reef tank. Any suggestion I can do it saft and not killing any of my fish. I also have couple nano tank with some coral in it. The FOWLR is a 45 gal, with about 10lb of live rock, and protein skimmer and a Aquaclear 300. Here is my plan:
Remove all the fish and live rock into a 33 gal tank.
Remove all the gravel and the UGF and clean the tank bottom.
Put 2 inch of fine sand on the bottem and put 1 inch of the old gravel on top, put a screen in between so I can remove the gravel later.
Put a HOB filter to clear the water and put the fish back.
I plan to culture some of the sand with live rock in a seperate container a month ahead to make more 'live'. And and some live sand from my 2yrs 10 nano to start with.
