Maroon clown questions>>>>

I just bought a maroon clown for $8.00 at my LFS, they have these wholesale bag sales every sunday. He looks very healthy and is now exploring my tank. I have him in my 29G reef, w/ 2 pearly jawfish, one purple headed wrasse, one blue chromes, 2 fire gobies, on cleaner shrimp, and a Singapore angel. I also have 35lb of LR, 9 corals, (lots of polyped ) + one feather duster and 5 blue legged hermits.

DO you think that there will be a problem? I just read that you shouldn’t keep maroons with non-aggressive fish. Should I remove him? I have a seaban anemone now. Would it host the maroon? I had a skunk clown before and it loved it so much that it made the seaban move all over my tank. Finally the skunk died. I think that the anemone killed the fish….what do you all think?

Yes, I think there will be a problem as your tank before the addition of this animal was overcrowded. I am also of the opinion that anemones are best kept in systems without sessile invertebrates, and to be in such a small tank will eventually show there to be other problems. I doubt strongly that the anemone killed the skunk clown (another very aggressive species).

"Purple headed wrasse" doesn't mean much, are you able to sort out genus and species? When dealing with your wrasse, this is of utmost importance (for instance, a Thalasomma spp. vs. Cirrhilabrus = one reef DESTRUCTIVE and another perfectly reef safe). I also think you have too many hermits in that tank.

Honestly to keep the animals you have, the volume of the system really should be at least double that volume.

Ultimately, yes, I can only recommend that you remove this fish, and stop adding fish. Watch the angel for nipping of LPS corals, as well as the sebae anemone and feather dusters. Also, even though one of the smaller angelfishes (growing to about 6"), it hardly qualifies as a dwarf or pygmy, and that is the only angelfish that would appropriate in this size system. Overcrowding like this tends to become a rule of problems further down the road.

If you really must add fishes, keep it to very small, slender-bodied fish that are not open water swimmers - neon gobies are among my favorites, clown gobies fall into this realm as well.

thats quite a small tank for all thows fish why not just upgrade to a bigger tank so you can fit more fish in it?

Clowns will host just about anything from anemones (their natural mates) to powerheads (hardly resembling).

I've been going through your postings, and I'm not so sure you really have a few days, the feeling that I get is that you're really excited about having this set up. The problem is that you're trying to push things too quickly, and losing a lot of animals because of this.

Slow down is the best first piece of advice I can give you. The second piece of advice that is ultimately far more important is to start researching as much as you can BEFORE you put anything else in your tank. Besides our library, we have Advanced Aquarist Online Magazine, and I also work with WetWebMedia.com. Bob's got lots of articles written by himself and others who are knowledgeable, as well as what can only be called an assload of FAQs, an archive of questions we receive daily.

For the most part i did do some research prior to the purchase of the fish. I've had the tank for about 6months now. Everything seems to be great. I know i went a little overboard. The maroon looks fine, he is now playing in the plate coral. I just dont know how much the coral is liking it. So far it seems that the plate coral isn't deflated. But its a bit smaller from normal.
