Here is a picture of a bunch of them huddled in the corner. Think of how wide the silicone edge is on a 10 gallon tank to get a good idea of how big they are. I counted over 100 in this pic!
PS - the ones laying on their side aren't dead even though they kind of look like it. They seem to lay on their sides a lot. Still haven't lost any but they are a bit sluggish.
Standard lighting schedule - 16 on and 8 off. Ihave a 13 watt PC over one tank and a 18W NO flourescent over the other.
I used some green and blue poster board instead of black on the sides of the tank just because we had it laying around. I used black construction paper on the 2nd and didn't notice any difference except the poster board was nicer than the construction paper.
I just threw in the M&M guy to keep them company. They seem to like him.
It also gives some perspective on pictures and down the road I'll be able to compare sizes.
You do realize you are corrupting them at an early age? I can see it now..."well, I can sell you these clownfish, but you have to feed them M&M's...they're picky like that"
Heh, I would sell them for $1 each right now. They have a LONG way to go before they are ready for market!
Here's the update!
Day 22 (I think)
Everything is still going well. Still working on getting them to go after the cyclopeeze better. Lost a couple over the last couple days. Still 250 - 300 of them though.
I have another batch set to hatch out tonight for the 3rd batch I will be trying to raise. Wife said that I couldn't put any more tanks in the spare bedroom so I moved the 10 day old fry that had just morphed in with the 22 day old fry. So far it seems like it is going to work. Probably over 500 total fry easy. Some of the new batch hatched early so it won't be a full hatch but should still be several hundred.
Here is a pic of one of the spare bedrooms that has been setup for my hatch out area:
wow this is amazing, it reminds me of the web site that I have of my little girl only there is only one of her, well and we don't keep her in a fish tank either!
Well I had my first significant losses today. I am using a thiin piece of plexiglass for the cover on the 10 gallon tank. I must not have put it back on exactly straight this morning after feeding them and the left side of the cover bent down into the tank a tiny bit. The clown fry investigated and swam up onto the lid and basically beached themselves on the plexiglass. So I came home to about 40 of them dried up on the top of the lid.
I still have at least a couple hundred from the 1st batch and since I mixed in the 2nd batch with the first that 10 gallon has at least 500 fry in it.
3rd batch is underway in the other 10 gallon and doing really well.
Just thought I would update everyone with my failures as well as my sucesses.
Well, things aren't going so well lately. I've lost another 40 or 50 over the last few days just dying. Looks like they are malnourished but I'm still feeding bbs and trying to feed more and more cyclopeeze. Water quality seems fine, I've been siphoning regularly and doing a 2 gallon water change every other day. Sponge filter has been going for over 2 weeks.
I breezed through the critical and catostophic periods per Joyce's books but now am really starting to lose some. Some are bright orange and active and seem to be doing really well, but there are still a bunch that are a dull brown color and are pretty skinny and lethargic.
Have you tried Golden Pearls? They make them in lots of different sizes and they have a kind of neutral buoyancy thing going so they don't all sink to the bottom and they don't seem to dissolve much.
I had all my premnas losses at or before morph,,, all the fry that ate pearls seemed to do ok and they eventually took to flake easily.
They have sizes from 5 to 800 microns,,, if you're weaning off BBS then maybe the 300-500 or 500-800micron size would be best.
I haven't tried any golden pearls. I thought the cyclopeeze were supposed to be "all that". I have the 2 smaller sizes the biggest I have is 100-200 microns so I doubt they would eat that.
I combined 2 batches of fry last week, maybe I didn't properly account for how much more food I should be feeding and am just not feeding them enough. I was overfeeding to start with and there were bbs that were never getting eaten so I tried to cut back. Now maybe I'm underfeeding.
What size of the golden pearls do you have left? I guess it might be worth a shot to try them.
With some help from the clownfish forum on RC I bought some basic test kits today and sure enough my nitrites were high. Did a 66% waterchange and fed really heavy and am going to do another 66% change tonight before lights out. Hopefully that will perk things up! Lesson learned - test as soon as something seems wrong instead of waiting until they start dying 20 at a time. I will probably lose 100 or so due to this if the ones that look like they are on their way out end up dying. Still have quite a few from both batches in that tank but at this rate they might not end up making it for another 5 months!
