tap tap tap...

I'm hearing the penny against glass tapping that tells me I've got one of those snapping, smashing spearing type of shrimp. How do I tell what type of shrimp it is. And if it is a bad guy, How do I catch him and sump him. I've heard these taps for a while but just cant find the little guy.

I know I don't have one in my nano, but I hear the sound occasionally as well. One day I happened to be looking at the tank when I heard it and found out what it was... one of my snails randomly swings around violently back and forth while keeping to the same spot and wacks the sides of his shell on rock or the glass (both sound the same to me). I have since seen him do it more, so I knew it wasn't a mantis or pistol shrimp.

From what I understand, if you hear the taps in any kind of ordered rhythm then it's a pistol shrimp, and that if it's random "popping" then its a mantis shrimp. Of course, I haven't ever heard it in person so I don't know how accurate that is :?
