Hello folks!

The man and I just bought this from our local LFS ... We're beginning the first stages of setting up our 130 gallon after having our 10 gallon nano for quite some time. We stopped by our favorite LFS tonight to see if they had any moonlights for our nano, and we found this instead:

-----------------------------------

It's completely overdesigned... 1/4" acrylic throughout, three drawers with holes in them for water to flow through ... duh ... and the other side which we coul use for the refugium. We have a spare 20 gallon tank sitting around, so we think perhaps we'll do two refugiums.

What do you guys think we should put in the drawers? Hermits? Really small pieces of LR?

Wanna take a swing at how much it cost us, brand new and with no discount? :D  Okay, I'll just tell you... $225. A pretty stunning price, especially out here in the SF bay area. Please let me know what you guys think!

first, I would cut bigger holes in the top of that 130.
then take that nice looking sump and take the bottom 2 drawers out and put some LR in there.
Then, I would drill a couple holes in there for a return pump and an
external skimmer.

Happy reefing

Bigger holes as in larger versions of the two rectangular holes in the top already? More room for airflow, I'm guessing? I've seen this tank is use at one of the LFS as well, and it looked nice so I'm probably going to pester them for setup hints with that format.

For the sump, the drawers are actually part of a smaller cabinet that can be removed, so I was thinking of putting it on the smaller side of the main cabinet, leaving the larger open area free for live rock and maybe some grass, with the requisite external skimmer and return line fitted. Basically putting all the filtration aspects in the one half of the sump, leaving the other half free for refugium type work.

No one else has any thoughts? :( I'm particularly interested in ideas for the drawers, preferably in a way that can use all three.

You could lay your carbon bags on one tray. Live rock on another. That won't be a very big refugium. I would add another made out of a tank or Rubbermaid container. Nice sump though for 225. Where's the store?

Hi!

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking carbon as well.

I bought it at SeaScapes in Mountain View. A lot of people don't seem to like the owner, but he's actually quite friendly once you get to know him. He just sold him store (it's going to stay a LFS tho) so he won't be there for long. I think this sump was the only one he had though, as he mentioned it was hand made by a friend in Washington, so if you wanted one call first!

I saw that same tank at SeaScapes and was thinking the shelves could be used for growing out frags. I would have got it, but to keep the draws functional for that purpose, you would need to run the tank almost full. It wouldn't be a good sump because you need extra room to catch water from the main tank in case of a power failure.

I hope the new owner keeps up with salt water. That is a nice location.

PS. I just moved to Palo Alto and am setting up a new tank, maybe we can trade frags one day.

Hey there neighbor!

Yeah, Rick said the new owners are two girls and that they would keep it a fish store, and I'm pretty sure he was meaning salt water as well as the fresh water. That's funny that you saw the sump before though! We're just setting up our 130 gallon now, and we have a 10 gal nano in our kitchen (all of which is moving to the big tank). Our clowns are going to be pretty damn happy to have that 130 to themselves for a little while. :)

You're right about the extra room though, and that's why we were going to connect it to a large separate refugium; what I meant in my original post was that the second half of the sump I showed would be a refugium as well as a secondary tank. So I think that will work out, in the case of a power failure, which is all too likely. Oh, PLUS we're getting a UPS for the big tank, so while we'll have no TV to watch if it does go out, at least we'll be able to watch the tank

Thanks for the ideas!
