I had a skilter a long time ago when I had a fishonly tank and I rarely used the skimmer part of it. Does anyone still use these things? I seem them at petstores and such but you never really hear anyone mention them.... now back to van wilder
I've had a Skilter 400 on my 20 gal for about 2.5 years. The main complaint is the noisy venturi intake for the skimmer. Get a decent air pump and use a good limewood diffuser in the bottom of the skim chamber. I get good muddy gunk from mine and it's about 500% quieter than the venturi. It's still installed just in case the pump dies. I would never try to use it in a tank much bigger than maybe a 30 even though it claims capacity for 100 gal. I get good water movment with it and the mechanical filtration of the pads helps as this tank is pretty much a FOWLR now, but I've had good success w/coral and other inverts.
My roomate back in college had one. Heh. I could hear that thing through 2 closed doors and down a 10 ft hallway at the other end of the apartment. :shakes head: How that thing ever even got on the market I'll never know.
As long as the marketing people can get a clever/catchy name that sticks, usually that is a sure sign that it will be a big hit. The fact that most of the unit you see in petstore were ordered 5+ years ago is a sure sign that the maketing people got a really big bonus the first year it came out.
I don't think they make the skilter anymore(If they do they don't market them much anymore). It was made by Danner Industries, who makes the Magdrive pumps. Good flow...bad skimmer.
