I have a 125 gallon stand, 6 feet long. There's a center board right in the middle of the stand that divides the sump area in two. I have a 40 gallon tank that I want to use as a refugium, and it would fit if the board was about 2 inches to the right.

Can I move it two inches to the left w/o worrying about my tank cracking??? I'm probably being overcautious here, but just reassure me.

I'd think it'd be fine. But if you've got a full tank on the stand at the moment, I'd at least temporarily brace it with 2x4s or something.

Hey Matt!

Is the board structurally sound? Or is the divider one of those particle board jobbies ? If it's the latter.. I say go for it. If not, then I agree with sharky, brace up the middle of the tank with some 2X4's .
Better to be safe than sorry...
God, i can't imagine a full 125 cracking and pouring all over the room.... sheeesh!

Oh, it's empty guys, lest you worry too much. I'm just planning ahead here. Thanks!

I actually would prefer to see the stand, or atleast an idea of the design before answering.....not all stands are created equal. :) I wouldn't think two inches would make a big difference, but I would never say that without seeing the design and knowing what type of quality the stand is....if it is a main support, the weight would be shifted more to one side giving one end more burden, but I wouldn't think the burden enough to make much difference if you are handy enough to to a quality job. The stress on the tank itself would be little in a two inch move, and I would hope the design would be made in a way to far excede the actual needed support. These are just guesses, but how about a pic or a nicely drawn design of the stand?

Moving the board 2 inches over the 6 foot span isn't going to matter much structurally.

if you're that concerned, move the board, then put two pieces of support stradling the tank. One on the back side and one on the front. I'd put them under the edges and call it art.

(but 2" over 6' won't make that much difference. But then again, 125 gallons of water-sand-dead-corals would suck to clean up)
