I was hoping to run a search and find someone that may have experienced the same thing. I had no such luck. I just purchased the Salifert test kit after getting some strange results with SeaChem. Problem is, the Salifert readings don't match anything on the color chart. Not even close. I am getting a brownish grey color. I even ran the test against a known 8.3 sample. Ironically, it is the same color I was getting with my aquarium water but still doesn't match any chart color. I couldnt' even consider it between colors. BTW, Seachem and Tetra both return 8.3 results. Did I just get a bunk kit?

Salifert doesn't use a color chart. Once the color changes, you have to look at the syringe and see what level the plunger is at and match that to the chart in the instructions. Their really easy once you use it.

sounds like you may have a faulty kit. Mine works just fine. Your adding 4 drops of the chemical with 5ml of water, correct?

The calcium test you read off of the plunger. At least on the instructions that came with the pH, You use the syringe and draw 5 mL of tank water. You put this in the clear, small vial and add 4 drops of reagent. Swirl for 10 seconds and look down through the vial onto the white background of the card and match colors. I am nowhere near any of the colors.

ReefNewbie thanks I was posting that second message as you posted yours... wasn't trying to be argumentative. just trying to explain how my test kit came to Newts. i am suspecting that something is up with the reagent although I can't find any expiration. i need to just pick up a probe.

One of the advantages of Salifert is that Habib, the owner, has a section on http://www.reefcentral.com. He's very user-friendly, pretty responsive....ask him, and quote the numbers on the bottles. They do occasionally get duff batches, he won't fob you off.

Unfortunately, one of the disadvantages is availability in the U.S. But it is generally a quality kit.
