Filter for 37 Gallon Reef

Hi guys,
I was wondering what filter recommendations you have for a 37 gal coral reef tank. I have heard you want to stay away from carbon filtration - I am only interested in a hang on style filter...any ideas?

Also, I am running a Prizm protein skimmer and have about 35 pounds of live rock in my tank. Do I even need a filter? Would I notice a difference in the clarity of the water with a filter compared to not having one?

I dont have a filter, only LR, LS and a skimmer. you dont really need a Hang on Filter if your rock is of good quality. I had an emporer, but took out the carbon and biowheel. The biowheel caused a nitrate spike that was getting out of hand. just my .02
