I couldn't help it! When I saw this in the LFS today, I had to have it. But what is it. Imounted it in a fairly bright, high current section of the reef but I without knowing what it is, I'm just guessing that's appropriate. Anybody know?

Thanks,
Hal

If I were to guess I would say it's in the genus MERULINA may be scabricula. but I'm not sure of that at all because it resembles a couple of other things. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance but I'm sure somebody around here can give you a more definitive answer.

Thanks for the input.

In the store I bought it from, they had it labeled as "Cup coral". The owner confessed that he really didn't know. One of the employees said "scroll coral". I would guess they were both thinking it was some form of Turbinaria.

I'm continuing to scour through all my books, but haven't found anything closely resembling it yet. Also, I really haven't seen any evidence of polyps. So now I'm wondering if it really is a coral.

It's definitely Montipora; most likely M. capricornis. It requires good light and water movement, but isn't as demanding as most Acropora species.
