I just traded some coral frags for a 175w pendant. My question is I want to put this over a 15g. But I will not be able to put any actinics b/c there is no room. Will it be ok without actinics? And what Kelvin rating should I get for the new bulb? I was thinking a 14K for some blue effect.

You don't need actinic, but for looks, you may want to get a higher Kelvin bulb.

I would probably go 20,000k on a 15g.
Heres my reasoning. You cant get any actinics on for that Blue look. With higher kelvin you may get a little less PAR, but on a 15g that really should not matter. That much on a 15 should be bright enough.

If you want fast growth go 6500k IMO

Second that opinion

Higher rated kelvin bulbs do not promote growth much, in my limited knowledge. Although moderate growth can be observe under a 10,000k bulb, but understood that blue bulb(radium/20,000k) does not improve the growth of sps. They do enhance the colouration though

It is a matter what is your aim, colour or growth?

For fast growth & brown sps=>go for 6,500k iwasaki bulb

For normal growth & slight colouration=>go for 10,000k bulb

For NO growth & nice colour=>go for 'blue' Bulb

For fast growth & nice colour=>?????????perhaps a combination of 6,500k & blue bulb
