Anyone have good descriptive plans on a DIY turf algae scrubber?
I live in Indiana and recently visted a shop called Inland Aquatics (http://www.inlandaquatics.com) Everything in their store has these scrubbers. They say that it is a much better method than using a skimmer. They also say this stops the need for regular water changes, as the scrubbers are much more efficient than a skimmer, without pulling out trace elements and such. THey never have to dose anything, it all regulates itself.
This shop is wholesale as well as retail, their prices are a little high, but most everything in there is tank raised.

I bought "dynamic aquaria" I think it is the orgin of the ATS??? It is a hard read for me but lots of good info. $61 at BN.com. This is the only other link I have other than inland. http://www.athiel.com/lib5/turf.htm

I plan on making one when my tank gets a little further along and I understand the pros and cons better. Inland aquatics sells a seed screen to help start it for $10(?) good luck.

Here's a link to give you some ideas: http://netclub.athiel.com/Ianrefug.htm

I really love the natural Algae method of filtration. I've been running skimmerless reefs for over a decade and wouldn't do it any other way, especially when dealing with SPS corals. Don't put your skimmer in storage just yet, as going skimmerless should really be reserved for advanced aquarists that have the understanding and patience to maintain a naturally balanced system.

Here's more on that subject: http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-01/eb/index.htm

IMPORTANT NOTE: Nothing reduces the need for regular water changes.

I'm not familiar with the subject, but I agree with this. Even if there's not skimmer to use up trace elements, what about all the animals in the tank?! Trace elements are gonna be depleted one way or another. :?
