lighting question

I was told by my LFS that 3 x 24 watt T-5 lights with reflectors was enough light for my 29 gal. tank, another LFS told me that this was not enough light. Even though the 1st one told me that the T-5 lights gave off more intense light, show I get rid of the 3 T-5's that I spent $140 just 3 months ago? I have Live rock, fish and soft corals.

It definitely doesn't matter for the rock and fish. For the coral, it depends on the particular species that you wish to keep. In general, soft corals need less lighting than SPS (stony) corals. If I were you, I would just enjoy your tank as it is, and if you decde to add corals that require higher lighting, add them only to the top of the rock. I probably would not attempt to keep any SPS corals. There are plenty of others that should do fine.

I believe the difference is in the depth of understanding. The LFS that gave you the no-no, more than likely decided on the fact that 72watts wasn't a good ratio for a 29gal and corals. Watts per gallon isn't really a good measurement to begin with because of the variations in lighting. I'll give the LFS that sold it to you the benefit of the doubt and probably know what T-5's are capable of. If you have the high quality reflectors (Sunlight Supply) than I'd say it's enough. The thin bulb of a T-5 allows the reflectors to increase output, I think up to 3X. I've seen very nice growth and coloration of SPS under T-5's and are probably the closest thing to MH right now. Get your feet wet with softies first as there's more to it than just lighting.
