HELP!! Water change didn't drop ammonia

The tanks is only 4 months old. I think the mandarin is the same?

Well, whatever the case, it's probably cycling right now....

I'll second that vote for poly filter too... Along with taking the mandarin back for store credit.

And I'd keep a close watch on the crabs / snails you have left too.. - Make sure you count 'em both several times a day and yank any that kick.

My test kit is Aquarium Pharmaceuticals brand. I've had the psycho for 4 months -- he eats constantly. I fed the scallop DT's directly as well... I think he croaked when the ammonia spike came.

Where is the best place to get the equip(s) you've recommended?

I would replace the test kit with a salifert kit. You could be getting false readings. Also polyfilters can be obtained several venders online. try www.marinedepot.com or www.premiumaquatics.com both have top notch service and sponcer this board.

tap water, have you tested freshly mixed water to see how bad it is?

Also, 33 % is hardly a large change, when things are that bad, dont bother with small changes, go for 50 %, personally I drain down to the sand if I'm really worried about something dieing.
